Expert Panel Conclusions

Overview

There has been a lot of research conducted worldwide to investigate possible health effects, including potential health effects on brain function from mobile phones.

In relation to radio frequency exposures and health, the general conclusion from the World Health Organization (WHO) is;

"A large number of studies have been performed over the last two decades to assess whether mobile phones pose a potential health risk. To date, no adverse health effects have been established as being caused by mobile phone use."

Expert Panel Conclusions

Several expert panels have made specific conclusions on the possible effects of radiofrequency exposure on brain function.

The UK Mobile Telecommunications Health Research 2007 Report states;

"The set of volunteer studies of brain function is one of the largest that has been carried out anywhere and covers possible reactions to exposure to radiofrequency (RF) fields and changes in response times and memory to blood pressure. However, none of these studies shows that brain function is affected by RF exposure and the Committee has concluded that there is no need for further studies on adults at the present time."

The SCENIHR 2007 report states (an EU committee) states;

"overall analyses do not show any clear neurotoxic effect at any level studied. Slight changes in electrical activity or neurotransmitter biochemistry have been observed.  Those changes do not act on cognitive processes, behaviour or memory and do not suggest pathological hazards.  Furthermore, no clear role of modulation has appeared"

The Health Council of the Netherlands 2002 states;

".... it seems possible that electromagnetic fields might influence brain activity under certain circumstances.  However only slight and reversible biological effects are involved which might even be regarded as beneficial for the most part.  They should certainly not be regarded as effects that are harmful to health".
